Our Story
begins with a young Herbold Wagner, Sr.
He mastered the art of sausage making in southern Germany during his youth. Harboring a dream to live in America, he embarked on a journey to the U.S. with nothing but his clothes and secret recipes for hot dogs and sausages.
Upon arriving in Philadelphia in 1937, Herbold initiated a butchering venture. However, due to stiff competition, he explored nearby areas for a better location and eventually established Wagner Provisions Co., Inc. in Gibbstown, New Jersey, in 1939.
Following Herbold, Sr.’s retirement in 1976, his son, Herbold, Jr., also known as Sonny, took up the mantle. Wagner Provisions produced a variety of meat products, including a pickled hot sausage that became popular across the tri-state area.
While the family maintained a butcher shop until 1990, the burgeoning pickled snack market soon became their primary focus. Until recently, the Wagners concentrated more on their products than on brand building. Now, under the leadership of Herbold III and the recent addition of Herbold IV, also known as “young Herb,” in 2021, the company is poised for a bright future with Herb’s Snack Foods leading the way.
